What is dividend yield?

Dividend yield measures how much income a stock pays relative to its price. The formula is: (Annual Dividend per Share / Stock Price) x 100. A $50 stock paying $2 per year has a 4% dividend yield.

Dividend investing basics

Dividend stocks pay you a portion of company profits regularly, usually quarterly. This creates a passive income stream on top of any price appreciation. Many investors build portfolios focused on high-yield, reliable dividend payers.

Yield vs total return

A high yield is not always better. A stock yielding 8% might be falling in price, which inflates the yield percentage. Look for stocks with sustainable dividend growth and a solid payout ratio. The best dividend investments combine reasonable yield with consistent price appreciation.
