What is average cost basis?
When you buy the same stock at different prices, your average cost basis is the weighted average price per share. The formula is: Total Cost / Total Shares. This tells you the breakeven price for your combined position.
Dollar cost averaging
Dollar cost averaging (DCA) means buying a fixed dollar amount at regular intervals regardless of price. When the price drops, you buy more shares. When it rises, you buy fewer. Over time, this lowers your average cost and reduces the impact of volatility.
Averaging down
If a stock drops after your first purchase and you buy more at the lower price, your average cost falls. In the example above, buying 10 shares at $150 then 15 shares at $130 gives you an average of $138.00 per share instead of $150.
