What is pip value?

A pip is the smallest price movement in forex. For most pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), one pip = 0.0001. For yen pairs (USD/JPY), one pip = 0.01.

The dollar value of a pip depends on your lot size. A standard lot (100,000 units) on EUR/USD has a pip value of $10. A mini lot (0.1) has a pip value of $1.

Why it matters

Knowing your pip value lets you calculate exact profit/loss for any price movement. A 50-pip move on 1 standard lot = $500. On 0.1 lots = $50. This is essential for position sizing.
